Why We Can’t Remove Dead Nigerians From Voter Register – INEC

Image
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday blamed its inability to remove the names of dead Nigerians from the nation’s voter database to the absence of adequate data of dead people. The INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this when he received chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja. He regretted that technology cannot assist the commission to identify and remove dead persons from the record.   Currently, 84,004,084 Nigerians are registered to vote but there are fears that the INEC register is grossly inaccurate due to the failure of the commission to expunge dead persons from it. INEC and the NPC had in 2018 signed a Memorandum of Understanding that would see the NPC providing information of dead voters to the electoral umpire but not much has been achieved. Yakubu explained that the commission had been conducting a periodical cleaning of the voter register by ...

. The Nigeria Association of Women Journalist's (NAWOJ), condemns in the strongest terms, the dehumanisation of a female Corps member - Ezeiruaku Ifeyinwa Fidelia by a female military officer, Lt Chika Viola Anale at the 13 Brigade Headquarters,   Calabar, Cross River state capital. It is appalling that the deliberate act of barbaric infringement on the human right of the NYSC Corps member - Ezeiruaku Ifeyinwa Fidelia by a female Army officer did not only negate professional ethics of the Nigerian Army, the act is also disgraceful, unwarranted and an insult on the dignity of womanhood. It is disappointing to note that while frantic efforts are being carried out by the government and other critical stakeholders to address the menance of Sexual and gender based violence, a female officer in this 21st century could engage in such an abusive and violent act.  This is unacceptable ridiculous, provocative and condemnable in every material particular.   While NA...
