Marcus Onobun admonished all and sundry to utilize any given opportunity to educate people on the need to shun crime

The Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun stated this recently in Benin City at a consultative workshop for government agencies and relevant stakeholders on effective implementation of Non-custodial measures(NCM)

The Speaker who officially kicked off the workshop at Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre in Benin commended the federal government for taking steps towards the implementation of Non-custodial measures. 

According to him, correctional centres are highly congested, overstressed and need discongestion noting that when crime rate reduces to the bearest minimum, the Police and other security agencies will have lesser work to do with more efficiency.

He pledged the determination of the House to provide legislative frameworks and necessary logistics for the implementation of the said measures.

Also present at the event were other government functionaries and stakeholders on correctional, judicial  and security matters including state controller, Correction Services, commissioner of police, representatives of other security agencies. 

On her part, the state controller, Correction Services, represented by the deputy, Joy Obayuwana who thanked the Speaker for honouring their invitation, advocated for effective implementation of Non-custodial measures as it will help to discongest correctional centres, reduce cost of maintenance as well as promote peace in the centres.

She also noted that as part of implementing the measures, nobody can be imprisoned during this Covid-19 pandemic.

According to her, the workshop was organized to create awareness on the part two of the Nigerian Correctional Services Act 2019 (Non-custodial measures), provide platform for government agencies and relevant stakeholders to interface on strategies for effective implementation of NCM, identify roles agencies and stakeholders can play to implement the measures.

The All Progressives Congress, APC in Edo State may be heading into the September 21, 2024 Governorship election as a divided party, if the romours of imposition of Mr. Dennis Idahosa as his preferred candidate is true. . The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has noted with concern, the alarming spikes in the cases of physical and domestic violence against women by their spouses. The ugly development is becoming worrisome, reprehensible, dastardly thus, totally unacceptable .
