Edo Assembly amends Local Govt Electoral Law, confirms Members of Independent Electorally commission.


Edo state House of Assembly has amended the Edo state Local Government Electoral law and Edo state Independent Electoral Commission Establishment (Re-enactment) Law 2017. 

The consideration of the amendment came shortly after a request by the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki for the house to amend section 21 subsection 1 of the existing principal law by deleting the figure “45” as it appears in the subsection and replacing with figure “15”.

The majority Leader of the House, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo, Member representing Ikpoba Okha constituency moved a motion that the proposed amendment be given a speedy passage, reason being that the third tier of government has been left without duly elected officials .
 He also said once amended, constituted members of Independent Electoral Commission will be able to carry out their functions effectively.

Also lending their voices in support of the amendment, Hon. Nosayaba Okunbor, the deputy Speaker, Hon. Roland Asoro, representatives of Orhionmwon I and II , said the activation of the third tier of government will tackle insecurity issues and other matters from the grassroots as well as give the people of the state a feeling of proximity to government.

Other supporters of the amendment include, Hon. Emma Okoduwa of Esan North East II, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele of Esan south East and Hon. Yekini Idiaye of Akoko Edo I. They urged for speedy passage of the Bill and said the amendment would set a template that will usher in duly elected chairmen of various local government councils in the state.

Hon. Okuarobo thereafter applied for the suspension of house  rules to enable it  do immediate justice to the Bill at hand. The  application was seconded by Hon. Asoro.

The house then dissolved  into committee of the whole to enable Legislators work on the bill. After a unanimous decision to approve the amendment, the house Speaker, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun requested clean copies of the resolution be sent to the Governor for assent

The newly amended law is to be cited as Edo state Local Government Electoral Law and Edo state Independent Electoral Commission Establishment (Re-enactment) Law Amendment Law 2022.

Also at the plenary, the House confirmed the reconstitution of membership of Edo state Independent Electoral Commission. 

The Speaker said Legislators had earlier interfaced with the nominees and the house agreed unanimously on speedy confirmation of the nominees. 

The confirmed members include; Hon. Justice James Oyomire (rtd) as Chairman of the commission, Mrs. Gladys Idahor, Uduafi Gabriel Esq., Mr. Felix Osebhuohen Ebheta, Mr. Okekuoyen Ehiedu, Mr. Michael Emmanuel and Mr. Vincent Omozokpia Aimienota. 

 Consequently, plenary was adjourned to Monday 28th March, 2022.
