COPYRIGHT/PIRACY.........MCSN SEEKS MEDIA SUPPORT IN TACKLING THEFT

By Kadiri Christopher

A copyright enforcement group under the aegis of Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, MCSN, has sought for a deepened support from the members of the fourth estate of the realm recently.

Speaking in Benin City, the Chairman of the society, Prince Biodun Eguakhide said, "MCSN was an owner, assign and  exclusive license of the largest repertoire of musical works and sound recording in Nigeria. The Supreme Court of Nigeria and other courts has held this position in a number of judgements and the recent judgement against Multichoice Nigeria where several billions of naira was awarded against them in claims and damages.

"Copyright protection begins as soon as an eligible work is fixed in a medium of expression. The medium does not require any formality for such protection to begin.

"There are certain exceptions in copyright infringement with respect to fair dealing which are for the purposes if research, private use, criticism, and review or reporting of current events", he said.

He strongly called on the media to assist in the fight against intellectual property theft.

Responding, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe said the union will send some journalists to work in partnership with the MCSN in order to sensitize the people on the danger of copyrights violations.

Highlight of the visit was musical  interludes performed by Arthur Segun Alile from his old album, Oh lady.
Other presentation was done by Professor Richard Ujiagbe in honour of a  female Journalist Comrade Rosemary Okoduwa who recently celebrated her birthday,
Comrade Rosemary Okoduwa is also the Secretary of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Edo State Chapter.
