Focus On Safe Motherhood As OSEC Advocacy Train Berths At Owan East

Pregnant women have been enjoined to take certain  precautionary and healthy steps towards ensuring the safe delivery of their unborn babies.

This was among issues discussed recently during the advocacy programme of the Oseno Centre(OSEC), a non-profit organization aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery at the Primary Healthcare level and providing life skills, care and support for children with neuro developmental challenges.

The programme, tagged: Safe Pregnancy and Childbirth in the Era of COVID-19 took  off at the Referral Medical Centre, Afuze in Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State and will be extended to other target areas, said head of OSEC.

Speaking to expectant women at the health centre, the guest speaker,  Dr Bright Oniovokukor, Executive Director, CESHAN told participants that all pregnancies are not the same, hence each pregnancy should be handled with utmost duty of care while registration for antenatal care should be made a matter of right and not choice.

He stated that hypertension in pregnancy has killed a great number of women, while preference for unskilled birth
attendants and quacks has increased the rate of Maternal and newborn death.

He noted that regular antenatal care, followed by ultra sound checks will arrest fatal changes and help pregnant women to deliver safely. He further tasked women to adopt all the safety measures in the book to ensure they delivered safely, including obeying the set Covid-19 protocols, maintaining a high level of hygiene and  healthy environment.

Also speaking, Dr Ira Oya, Director of Primary Healthcare, Owan East Local Government Council noted that the event was a history making one, especially with the entrance of  the second wave of COVID-19,  a new and aggressive variant that kills with tenacity.
" We cannot over emphasise the need for expectant mothers to maintain a high sense of personal hygiene during this crucial period. While many may be relying on the uptake of Vaccines to tackle COVID-19, vaccines may not go round, and it may take a while before everyone eventually gets vaccinated, but  it will only take you a little extra effort to maintain personal hygiene, put on your face mask, maintain physical distance and wash your hands with sanitisers."

He also mentioned that the Covid-19 protocols will be enforced in the local government area, moreso with the signing into law by the President of the legal enforcement rules.

Earlier in her welcome remarks, Sabina Idowu-Osehobo, Founder and Executive Director of OSEC, stated that the organisation works in two broad areas, namely, to ensure pregnant women delivered safely and to promote and support the wellness of children with neuro developmental issues.

She applauded the patience of the expectant mothers and commended them for paying attention to the health talks.
"I am particularly grateful to the elders who are the gate keepers of the place for their commitment and willingness to partner with us. Before we arrived, they had already sent messages across and mobilised their people, including pregnant women. "

She said the choice of local government area was as a result of discussions with the PHC Board, and based on where the worst indicators of Maternal and infant mortalities, malaria, child diarrhea were recorded, including an assessment of health facilities not in use.
High point of the programme was the distribution of delivery packs to excited pregnant women.

Receiving  the delivery packs from the Founder and Executive Director of OSEC,   Mrs Airaoje Funmilayo, Director of Nursing Services thanked the organization for the kind gesture and assured her that the delivery packs will be well utilised for the purpose it was meant.

Afegbai Theophilus, Assistant Chief Nursing Officer,  and Elamah Mulikat, Senior Nursing  Officer of the Referral Medical Centre also paid glowing tributes to the Oseno Centre, while Chief Peter Uenazekin JP, Spokesperson on behalf of the elders thanked the organization for the advocacy visit and appealed for the extension of same across the other local government areas in  Edo state.
