Edo Assembly commences deliberations on anti open grazing bill



The Edo State House of Assembly has commenced  the process to pass the Bill for a Law to prohibit open grazing of cattle and other livestock  in Edo state. The Bill passed it’s second reading today during a resumed plenary following  wide consultations with stakeholders and various interest groups on the decision to ban open grazing in the state.


Setting the tone for the debate, Speaker, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun said the  Bill has been long awaited and its imperative in the state's bid to check criminal activities and insecurity; this the speaker said is a major reason the Bill should be considered.

Speaking in favour of the Bill, member representing Ikpoba Okha and Majority Leader, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo, said passing the Bill will restore peace, sanity and security in the state, adding that herders, over the years have overrun farmers in their various communities. 

He encouraged his colleagues to throw in support for the passage of the Bill.

Also lending their voices the chief whip, Hon. Emma Okoduwa of Esan North-East II, Hon, Emmanuel Agbaje of Akoko Edo II, Hon, Nosayaba  Okunbor of Orhionmwon I, Rt. Hon. Francis Okiye of Esan North East I, Hon. Sunday Ojiezele of Esan South-East and Hon. Ephraim Aluebhosele of Igueben, highlighted some other key benefits of the bill to include job creation, boost farm produce, investment returns, reduce biodegradation and reduction of road accidents.

Rt. Hon. Okiye however, made some observations regarding the extent and maximum land use for ranching. He urged his colleagues to look into that as they expedite passage of the Bill.

After a unanimous decision by the house to progress with the Bill, the speaker thereafter referred the Bill to the House Committee on Public Security, Agriculture and food security to give a closer look at the observations made during plenary as well as inputs of various constituencies, civil society groups, farmers and other stakeholders, to be reported to the house in two weeks.

Also at the plenary, the house received a request from the Governor, to confirm nominees  for the Sports Commission Board. The nominees include, Mr. Yusuf Ayeh (Chairman), Hon. Frank Ileaboya (Executive Director North) and Mrs. Anehita Omeya  (Executive Director Central).

Other members are Barr. Nosayaba Osayergun (Executive Director South), Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa (Executive Director Professional), Mr. Asuen Ighodalo (Member representative of private sector) and Mr. Uyi Akpata (Member representative of the Chairman).

Mr. Speaker referred to the House committee on Rules and Business to interface with nominees and report to the House.

In other news, the Speaker announced the reshuffling of Chairmen and members of various House Standing Committees to oversee the various ministries of state government. 

He said the minor adjustment was in view of the adjustments made by the State government on various ministries.


However, the House committee on Selection remains with Mr. Speaker retaining his position as the Chairman.

Hon. Idaiye Yekini, member representing Akoko-Edo I constituency moved the motion for adjournment which was subsequently seconded by Hon. Ephraim Aluebhosele of Igueben. Plenary was therefore adjourned to Tuesday February 22nd, 2022.

Edo 2024: Crisis Brew in Edo APC Over Oshiomhole's Endoresement of Preferred Candidate

The All Progressives Congress, APC in Edo State may be heading into the September 21, 2024 Governorship election as a divided party, if the romours of imposition of Mr. Dennis Idahosa as his preferred candidate is true. NAWOJ Demand justice for her member assaulted by Ex_husband

. The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has noted with concern, the alarming spikes in the cases of physical and domestic violence against women by their spouses. The ugly development is becoming worrisome, reprehensible, dastardly thus, totally unacceptable . It is particularly worrisome to note that in the month of August 2022 alone, there were three documented cases of wife battery that inflicted serious physical injuries, mental torture, dehumanised sanctity and dignity of victims by their husbands in the country.
