Edo Nuj celebrates 100 days in office amidst encomiums
Beyond the merriments and banters to herald the first 100 days in office of the leadership of the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, led by Comrade Festus Alenkhe, it was also a moment to take stocks and reflect on the journey so far.
To commemorate the 100 days milestone, a tradition invented by the political class to assess and measure the impact and/or performance of elected public office holders, the NUJ Exco, led by the indefatigable Comrade Festus Alenkhe, lined up a series of activities to mark the occasion.
One of them was a thank - you - tour to the NUJ chapel, the base of the Union, and was purposely initiated to create a common ground between the executive and the members, in a way that promotes conviviality and camaraderie
In addition, the tour afforded the NUJ Exco an opportunity to render an account of its stewardship as well as solicit for greater support from the rank and file in the onerous task of building a virile and vibrant Union.
During the "thank the NUJ members" interactive session, Comrade Alenkhe listed some notable projects embarked upon by his Exco in the past 100 days, adding they represent "major milestones" in the bid to change the face of the Union.
Some of the listed projects includes ty ongoing facelift of the NUJ secretariat, including the toilets and other conveniences; installation of CCTV; provision of 24 hour internet facility; the formation of a multi purpose cooperative; enhanced training for Journalists, among others.
A cross section of the state NUJ members expressed satisfaction with the modest achievements recorded by the Comrade Alenkhe led Exco in the past 100 days, insisting they have so far matched their words with action.
In particular, they pointed at the 24/7 power supply which will accrue to the NUJ secretariat, saying such a feat is the fruit of the effective interface between the state government and Union's Exco, resulting in Gov Obaseki directing authorities of Ossiomo power plant, a private power plant based in Benin, Edo State.
